In recent years, with the enhancement of the economic strength, international prestige andthe exchange with economy and culture between China and American, Chinese teaching hasbeen paid unprecedented attention by Americans. As a result, there are more and moreprimary and secondary schools which set Chinese courses. However, the Chinese teachingmaterials specified for American children have some problems in terms of their quantity andquality. Therefore, compiling suitable Chinese teaching materials for American children is anurgent problem needed to be deal with for the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language.“Treasures”, co-published by the companies of Macmillan and McGraw-Hill, is a set ofteaching materials specified redacted for American students from grade one to six. TheMcGraw-Hill company is not only the world’s famous educational publishing company, butalso one of the biggest publishing groups in American, which accounts for a great fraction ofthe market of teaching materials of American primary and secondary schools. The Americanfamilies are fond of “Treasures” since they were published. And “Treasures” are appointed tobe one of the teaching materials in California and are considered to be a set of representativemother tongue teaching materials for American primary schools.This thesis is divided into five parts. To begin with, we summarized the research origin, thedomestic and overseas research status, research methods and the demarcation of Chinesechildren. Following, we discussed the obeyed theoretical factors from three aspects whencompiling the teaching materials of Chinese as a foreign language. These three aspectsinclude the combined compiling concept of structure, function and culture, the compilingprinciples of the teaching materials of Chinese as a foreign language and country-specificChinese.Thirdly, by means of analyzing the compiling status of Chinese teaching materials forAmerican children, we pointed out some existing problems among themselves. Based onthese, the present essay compared the 《Treasures》 and 《World Young Learners’ Chinese》in terms of structures and contents. For structures analysis, the research was focused mainlyon the frame system and unit system. And for contents analysis, a piece of emphasis in thepresent work, we elaborated it from the text system, prompt system and operating system, inorder that we could provide some suggestions for the compiling of Chinese as a foreignlanguage for American Children. The suggestions are as following,1) some figures should be inserted so as to simulate the students’ interest,2) the selected topics should be sincerity andinteresting, which are in accordance with the children’s psychology,3) the training modesshould be diverse,4)increase the tip in the material,strengthen the guide of knowledge,5) thecompiling of the teaching materials should be combined with the American “5C” principles,walked the road of Sino-foreign co-edit and also should be combined with the newexamination outline of Chinese of primary and secondary schools. The last part is conclusions,which sums up the main viewpoints of the thesis.
