Chinese Eighty-hundred Units written by Ye Shengtao and Xia Mianzun was a kind of junior Chinese textbooks in the period of Republican China which met the needs of the times with special features. The units of this Chinese textbook was arranged by four parts:literary criticism, anthology, grammar or rhetoric and question and answer practice, which was good for students to improve reading ability and writing ability. We can say it created a scientific start for the Chinese textbooks writing. It also influenced the later Chinese textbooks’ writing and is still of great significance nowadays with scientific, humanity character, practicality and so on. Taking Chinese Eighty-hundred Units as the subject for study, this article does further research in the contents and arrangement to dig the features out. It will be a meaningful job to summarize something revelatory to the contemporary Chinese textbooks.This article includes six parts.The first part, introduction. It briefly introduces research significance, research situation at home and abroad, research methods.The second part, i.e. the first chapter discusses the time background of the publication of Chinese Eighty-hundred Units.This chapter discusses curriculum standards, multiplex editing system, educational philosophy and practice of Ye Shengtao and Xia Mianzun to introduce the background of Chinese Eighty-hundred Units.The third part, i.e. the second chapter about editing characteristic(part one).This chapter crosswise analyses the editing characteristic in a list form and studies literary criticism, anthology, grammar or rhetoric and question and answer practice with summary of each part’s characteristic in sequence. The characteristic of literary criticism is the level of progressive arrangement and the principle of starting with easy things first with profound terms in a simple way. Anthology shows refined essay and diverse genres. Grammar or rhetoric focuses on the choice of words and how to be better. Question and answer practice centres on literary criticism, anthology, grammar or rhetoric to pose questions and make students learn the new by restudying the old.The forth part, i.e. the third chapter talks about editing characteristic(part two). Based on the second chapter this chapter studies the content system and arrange system lengthways to find out systematic and common characteristic, that is progressiveness practicality scientific, humanity character.The fifth part, i.e. the third chapter expounds the textbook’s limitation which are deficiency in humanity character and help-reading system of the part, question and answer practice.The sixth part, i.e. conclusion. Based on the research and current textbooks, this chapter puts forward some constructive suggestion to textbook writing and composition teaching at present.
