Chinese language textbooks are generally divided into four parts: excerpt systems, knowledge system, helping reading system, and exercise system. Exercise system as an indispensable constituent element in Chinese language textbooks, plays an extremely important role in language teaching. Scientific design and effective use of exercise systems not only provide supports for teachers’ teaching activities, but also can help students to master and consolidate language knowledge, develop language proficiency, improve language literacy. Therefore, the study of Chinese language textbook exercise system has important implications on textbook compiling design and actual Chinese language teaching. Retrospecting the Chinese language textbooks of the last century, we can easily find that compilation and publication of textbooks during the time of the Republic of China is the most active. Chinese Hundred-eight Units, which is edited by Xia Mianzun and Ye Shengtao, occupies a very special and important role in the present compilations of junior middle school Chinese language textbooks. The scientific compiling conception and the frame of the system of this set of textbooks is still a good reference to current textbook compiling. Owing to this, this paper treats the representative textbook of the Republic of China “Chinese Hundred-eight Units” as the research object, and attempts to analyze this set of textbooks from the view of exercise design deeply, digging its compiling features of the exercise design. And by the foundation of analyzing the shortcomings of the current system of junior middle school Chinese language textbook exercises, we make further implications on the design of homework exercise system of current junior middle school’s Chinese language textbook, in order to refine and improve the compilation of junior middle school’s Chinese language textbook in our country.This paper is divided into the following parts: The first part is mainly focus on the background of the book 《Chinese Hundred-eight Units》and makes a brief introduction of Xia Mianzun and Ye Shengtao’s Chinese language teaching thoughts and views in order to give a more clear and comprehensive understanding to the compilation of this set of textbooks.Second part of this paper firstly defines the relevant concepts and then on this basis, we make a clear relationship between exercise and "Xiwen". Secondly, we make a discussion on the developing changes of exercise system of our country’s Chinese language textbooks.The third part, with the aspects of the amount of exercise, system layout and contents of "Xiwen" in 《Chinese Hundred-eight Units》 analyzed, summarizes the characteristics of the "Xiwen" system of this set of textbooks.The fourth part, after questionnaire survey and further analysis of the textbooks, indicates the design features and shortcomings of homework system of the current junior middle school Chinese language textbook PEP.The fifth part, though the characteristics of the "Xiwen" system and the shortcomings of homework system of the current junior middle school Chinese language textbook PEP, which the previous chapter summarizes, makes a further enlightenment to the system design of exercise of the current junior middle school Chinese language textbooks.
