As a core teaching material in a course, textbook is the most essential teaching aid in schooling. Scholars have been devoted to the research of Chinese curriculum and teaching since Chinese was established as a discipline in 1903. However, the researches related to the Chinese textbooks are much fewer comparatively. Meanwhile, though the Chinese Curriculum Standard has been through a series of revisions, the modifications are minor and fail to bring any substantial changes to Chinese textbooks. From the year 2009, scholars have focused more and more on the research about Chinese textbooks which had lacked attention it deserved. Since then, a mass fervor about criticizing Chinese textbooks of primary-school levels has been arounsed in academia. Among all the educationists of the older generation such as Shengtao Ye, Shi Hu, Qichao Liang, Lijin Xi and Mianzun Xia, Jinxi Li is considered as the one who has devoted the most to the Chinese teaching in primary school and has achieved the greatest achievement. The thesis, with attempt to combine actual teaching experience with the textbook (the second term of the second grade in primary school, Renjiao version) under the guidance of Jinxi Li Chinese Curriculum Theory, complies and edits a book for extracurricular reading. The author, as a teacher who is in service, will analyse the deficiencies of current textbooks as well as provide supplementary help for students. The thesis is divided into four chapters:chapter 1 gives an introduction to the reasons of topic selection, research background, research design and methodology; chapter 2 explains the education theory of Jinxi Li in detail, especially his thoughts about textbooks; chapter 3 analyses the current textbook of Renjiao version in terms of its editing system and choice of samples while pointing out its insufficiencies which needs improvement; chapter 4 aims to propose problem-focused suggestions about guidelines, principles, frameworks and contents about extracurricular reading under the guidance of Jinxi Li Chinese Curriculum Theory.
