A Project Report On Translation Of Culture Of Ethnic Groups In Guangxi (Mulam Ethnic Group)

The translation for international communication of culture of ethnic groups has become an indispensable part of cultural soft power in China,especially the culture of local unique ethnic groups.This report,based on the author's translation of Mulam culture,including clothes and accessories,marriage,festivals,taboos,dwelling,etiquette,customs,diets,entertainment and religion,nearly 22,000 Chinese characters,studies on the process of project.It aims to have some references for the translation for international communication of ethnic groups' culture and to provide some ideas and inspiration to related studies.This report,taking the culture of Mulam as translation material and summarizing project introduction,pre-translation,translation process,case study and translation experience,mainly analyzes some expressions featured with local culture from two aspects according to Christian Nord's Functionality Plus Loyalty translation theory:lexical and syntactic.In terms of words,religious,social and material culture-specific items are analyzed;in terms of syntax,main analyses lie on long and complicated sentences,and some flowing and loose sentences.The author finds that,in the translation for international communication of culture,free translation and transliteration plus explanatory translation are taken as main translation strategies in the translation of culture-specific items;some contents of long and complicated sentences and flowing sentences should be deleted or added,and the orders of sentences also should be adjusted in order to avoid Chinglish and make the translation conform to English expression,thus target readers can learn about cultural characteristics of original work clearly and accurately.
