General education is a kind of education whose goal is to cultivate the integrated development people. To be an educational idea and an educational practice, it has opened up a new way of cultivating talent for our country. Newly-built undergraduate universities are playing an important role in higher education and taking the arduous tasks of cultivating the integrated development people. However, being influenced by system and cognition, general education is not valued in newly-built undergraduate universities. Thus, there are some urgent problems to be solved.This research contains two kinds of theories. One is the comprehensive development theory that was initiated by Karl Marx, and the other is the philosophical theory which includes perpetualism, progressivism and essentialism. Taking H University as an example, collecting material by questionnaire, interview, the related policies and documents, and using the analytical method of the combination of quantitative and qualitative and the combination of whole and part, this thesis points out the problems and reasons of general education in newly-built undergraduate universities and comes up with some strategies. The thesis is divided into six parts as follows:The first part is introduction. It mainly explains this research's origins, significance,status quo, and the thoughts and methods.The second part is concept definition and theoretical basis. It starts from the conception of newly-built undergraduate universities and general education, clarifies the difference between newly-built undergraduate universities and old universities, expounds the connotation of general education with free education, cultural quality education,professional education, and elaborates the theoretical basis of this research in detail.The third part is the main part of this thesis. In order to analyze the present situation of general education in newly-built undergraduate universities,it takes H University as a case, and investigates statistics and analyzes data from five aspects,which are the idea of general education, the curriculum setting, the classroom teaching, the second classroom,and the innovation.Based on the analysis above, the fourth part summarizes the problems and the causes. There are several problems of general education in newly-built undergraduate universities. They are the lacking of idea spread, the impropriety of curriculum setting,the unsatisfactory of classroom teaching, the indifference of second classroom, and the unsmooth of innovation.The fifth part puts forward some specific strategies. In order to deal with these problems,we can set up and popularize the correct idea of general education, construct and optimize the scientific curriculum, strengthen and promote teachers' construction,develop and integrate resources, establish and consummate the regulation and evaluation system.The sixth part is the conclusions of this thesis.
