The whole translation project is composed of three parts:the selected source text and the translated text of X-marks:Native Signatures of Assent,as well as a critical commentary on the translation. This critical commentary is divided into four sections:1)introduction;2)theoretical guidance for the translation;3)specific translation methods;4)conclusion.The first section of the commentary introduces in detail the translation project. It includes a summary of the original text,an introduction to the author,an analysis of the stylistic features of the text as well as the significance of the translation project. The second section starts with an introduction to Newmark's text typology, and then moves on to his semantic and communicative translation theories. In the third section, specific translation methods adopted under the guidance of the:above-mentioned theories are listed, together with some examples and detailed analysis:Communicative translation theory dominates the whole translation process at the lexical, syntactic and semantic level.Besides, semantic translation also functions in translating the exotic words. The critical commentary ends with a conclusion. Here,a summary of the whole process of translation is made and some insights into producing good translation and becoming a qualified translator are mentioned.X-marks,a highly inspiring book on the national and cultural renewal of the Indian nations, has produced great influence on Native American studies.Even though countless English works are translated into Chinese every year, very few of them are related to Native American studies. The translation of such an influential book will make up for the deficiency, providing precious information for Chinese readers who have interest in Native American research.
