With the increase of scientific innovation and patent applications in China, more and more attention has been paid to patent technology and patent text translation, therefore, the influence of patent text translation is becoming more and more prominent in the development and exchange of patent information.Being a document involving three fields of language, law and technology, translation of mechanical patent texts has always been the translators' focus of attention, and it is the basic link of technology achievement transformation and technology introduction.Translation of the mechanical patent texts is of great significance to the introduction of advanced technology in China.Guided by Skopos Theorie, this practice report studies the translation problems encountered during the translation practice of mechanical patent texts and sums up some guidelines for the translation of mechanical patent texts to provide reference for further study of the translation of similar texts.Based on feature analysis of the source text, this practice report takes Skopos Theorie as theoretical foundation to resolve the problems encountered in the translation process from lexical, syntactic and discourse aspects, and analyzes the translation techniques adopted with typical cases. The major findings are as follows: under the guidance of Skopos Theorie, the rules of skopos, coherence and fidelity should be followed so as to accurately reproduce the original information. To be specific,on lexical level, compound words, abbreviation and legal adverbs should be translated by putting into accurate contextual meaning according to the skopos rule.On syntactical level,verb-object and subject-verb structures can be used for the translation of nominalization, and Chinese active sentences and no-subject sentences are often used for the translation of passive voice.Long sentences can be translated by the “three-step method” of determining the logical relationships, merging or splitting sentences and getting the accurate translation. On discourse level, some logic conjunctions in English usually need to be omitted in Chinese. Moreover, formulaic language is often translated literally in the mechanical patent texts. This report is divided into five chapters.Chapter one is the introduction, including background and significance of translation, literature review and report framework.Chapter two is the translation process, including pre-translation preparation, translation and post-translation quality control.Chapter three is studies of the source text and its theoretical foundation.Chapter four is the case study.Typical cases of translation problems on lexical, syntactic and discourse levels and the techniques adopted in translation are analyzed from the perspective of Skopos Theorie.Chapter five is the conclusion which summarizes the major findings and limitations of this translation practice.
