Language curriculum standards and current development trends demand that an emphasis be placed on the absorption and innovative application of foreign culture,which has resulted in foreign literature being recognized and valued at the national level.However,in the actual language reading classroom,many language teachers,as a result of multiple factors such as exam-centered utilitarian thinking and students' low interest in learning,treat foreign literature,represented by European and American literature,as a "supporting role" to complement Chinese literature,leaving these excellent European and American literary works at the "They used to mutilate European and American literary works." They are accustomed to dissecting European and American literary works into mechanical explanations of Chinese examination points and techniques,resulting in the aesthetic,moral and ethical values embedded in these excellent European and American literary works being ignored,missing a good opportunity to broaden students' cultural horizons,provide language education and enhance their language literacy.To address the current problems and status quo of reading European and American literature,this paper uses literature reading,comparative analysis,action research,and questionnaire surveys.On the basis of understanding the current situation and problems of reading European and American literary works,the paper puts forward its own views on the practical points of group reading,applies the task strategy,book chatting strategy,and KWL+ strategy to the group reading of European and American literary works,using The Great Tragedy by Leo Tolstoy as an example,and makes an inquiry into the specific evaluation of the teaching effect of group reading,with a view to giving The study is intended to provide research materials and ideas for new teachers who are trying out group reading.This study is a practical test and a comparative analysis that reveals that group reading in European and American literature can play a different role from single reading,in that it can increase the total amount of reading for students,complement the current reading teaching model,improve students' thinking skills,and encourage teachers to increase their knowledge base.Group reading is the essence of many experts' and scholars' research and has proven its value in developing students' higher-order thinking and in increasing their total reading and reading speed.More and more language teachers are applying group reading to their own reading classes of novels,literary texts,and prose to improve their teaching,but there are very few cases where it is applied to the reading of foreign literature,indicating that the value of group reading in the reading of European and American literature needs to be continued to be researched and explored by teachers.
