This report is based on a simulated Chinese-English consecutive interpreting project of Protection,Inheritance,Innovation and Development of Intangible Cultural Heritage,a speech delivered in Langfang Cultural Fair and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Inheritance Development and Innovation Forum of Intangible Cultural Heritage.The interpreter has conducted the practice twice.During the first interpreting practice,the interpreter mainly encounters difficulties encompassing Chinese idioms,semantic redundancy,logic confusion and rhetorical devices,which increase the burden of comprehension and rendering of the source language.The interpreter is required to have a good understanding of the source text as well as background knowledge to make an accurate and concise rendering.The interpreter should grasp the main idea within a limited time span,deverbalize the sense and re-express it to the recipients.Additionally,some illogical expressions are inappropriately retained during the first interpreting,making the rendering illogical for the recipients.In the second interpreting,under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory,the interpreter has adopted four strategies,namely,paraphrasing,generalization,logic restructuring and substitution.Substitution includes choosing expressions in target language which is most related with the source language in language form,semantics and pragmatics as well as the usage of superordinate,which is conducive to reserving the image of metaphors and make the connotative meaning of synecdoche concise and understandable.Through the adoption of these four strategies,the interpreter has achieved better effects to serve the audience.It is hoped that the coping strategies offered in this report will be helpful for other interpreters in addressing similar difficulties in interpreting.
