As China has played a more and more important role in the world arena, it isurgent for people overseas to know more information about the reality in Chinanowadays. News reports, which are a very important form to spread information today,are one of the major ways for people to get the information that they want in theinformation era. A Village Boy’s Gambling (Special Report), on which the reflectionresearch is based, is selected from Southern Weekend, one of the most influentialweekly newspapers in China.When a text is translated into another language from one language, culturalfactors are inevitable to be talked about. The story of the news report involves theChinese education system, superstitious practices, idioms and proverbs with Chinesecharacteristics. These factors are unfamiliar to foreigners who do not know muchabout China, and they need to be coped with during the translation.The research consists of four sections. Chapter One introduces the background ofthe source text and analyses its language features. Chapter Two makes a briefoverview of the translation process from the perspective of text typology theory, targetreaders and the strategies adopted in the translation. Chapter Three elaborates theproblems encountered in the translation and their solutions in great details in a casestudy way. As the conclusion part, the last chapter makes an assessment of the effectwhich the methods of dealing with the problems achieve and points out where thetranslator should improve. |
