This thesis is a report on the English-Chinese translation of Chapters IV through VI of FIFTY YEARS IN AMOY OR A History of the Amoy Mission, CHINA. The book was written by Philip Wilson Pitcher, the missionary of the Reformed (Dutch) Church at Amoy and published in1893. The three chapters are mainly about the Amoy District. The thesis gives an introduction to the translation project, provides the source text and its Chinese translation and analyzes the translation process, the difficulties encountered and the methods applied. A large number of materials have been read before the translation and much effort has been put during and after the translation. The thesis introduces the three difficulties encountered during the translation and tries to solve them. Literal translation is the main translation technique, but the translation of the passive voice, addition, omission, conversion, division, as well as negation have also been applied during the translation when necessary and analyzed with examples. The thesis concludes with the gains and lessons from the project and points out what should be done to become a qualified translator.
